Businesses worry as 100-day Brexit countdown starts: 19 December marks the 100-days-to-go point before Brexit, the divorce of the United Kingdom from the European Union, but businesses state they are no closer to understanding what contingencies they need to make, especially if a No Deal Brexit occurs, a scenario that the U.K. government yesterday started making plans for, albeit still with the aim of avoiding one, according to the British Chambers of Commerce.

The British Chambers of Commerce said in a news release that “businesses have been watching in horror as politicians have focused on factional disputes rather than practical steps that business needs to move forward. … Businesses of all sizes are reaching the point of no return, with many now putting in place contingency plans that are a significant drain of time and money.”

Apple Leisure agree to take majority stake in Alua: Apple Leisure Group has agreed to purchase a majority stake in Alua Hotels & Resorts, which was founded in 2015 and has 14 resorts, all in Spain, according to a press release.

The release stated that “Alua will become the American group’s hotel brand of reference for the mid-market sector, both in Europe and globally” and include the management of more than 4,000 rooms in Spain. Alua’s CEO Javier Águila will assume the role of president, Europe, for Apple.

Sales and marketing execs adapt as group demands change: Sales and marketing experts during a recent Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association event discussed how they are dealing with changes in group demand, more digital communication and more, HNN’s Stephanie Ricca writes.

At the start of the conversation, participants agreed that they have seen a shift in group booking behavior to more online communications.

“I will speak to the group buyer when I say they really don’t want to speak to anybody,” said Linda Price-Topp, VP of sales for Marcus Hotels & Resorts. “It’s very difficult to get somebody on the phone to talk through (leads) a little more and it’s difficult to build a relationship in that environment.”

Rogers takes over helm at AHLA: William “Chip” Rogers has been named as the new president and CEO of the American Hotel & Lodging Association, according to AHLA. Previously president and CEO of the Asian American Hotel Owners Association, Rogers takes over the position at AHLA from Katherine Lugar, who announced her exit in September to head up the American Beverage Association.

Rogers had been head of AAHOA since March 2015 and has represented the state of Georgia in both the House of Representatives and State Senate. Lugar held the AHLA post since 2013. AAHOA said it would begin a comprehensive search for a new CEO.

Americans underline desire to travel in 2019: According to research involving 3,500 U.S. consumers by Travel Leaders Group, 96% of Americans plan on traveling in 2019 during their vacations. More than three-quarters plan on taking at least two trips, while 36% stated those trips would involve some solo travel.

The U.S. destinations heading up travelers’ wish lists are the perennial favorites of Hawaii, Alaska and California, respectively, while internationally the top picks are the Caribbean, Western Europe, Mexico, the U.K. and Ireland.
