HENDERSONVILLE, Tennessee—At the end of the second quarter of the calendar year, the Canadian hotel development pipeline includes 223 projects comprising 26,172 rooms, according to the June 2009 STR/TWR/Dodge Construction Pipeline Report released this week. This represents a 6.9-percent increase in the number of rooms in the pipeline compared to May 2009 and a 6.0-percent increase in the number of rooms in the pipeline compared to June 2008.
The Chain-Scale segments reported mixed results in the number of rooms in the In Construction phase of the active pipeline, ranging from single-digit increases to double-digit decreases in year-over-year comparisons. The Luxury segment experienced the largest increase in rooms in the In Construction phase, rising 4.6 percent to 682 rooms. The Upscale segment also reported an increase in rooms in the In Construction phase, increasing 2.0 percent to 2,263 rooms. The Economy segment took the biggest fall in rooms in the In Construction phase, experiencing a 52.4-percent decrease to 79 rooms. The Upper Upscale segment also reported a large decrease, down 31.2 percent to 464 rooms in the In Construction phase of the pipeline.
