STR: Caribbean/Mexico pipeline for May 2010

HENDERSONVILLE, Tennessee—The Caribbean/Mexico hotel development pipeline comprises 133 hotels totaling 17,172 rooms, according to the May 2010 STR/TWR/Dodge Construction Pipeline Report released this week.

Among the countries of the region, Mexico reported the largest number of rooms in the total active pipeline (10,856). The country also reported 5,120 rooms in the In Construction phase, which is more than 40 percent of rooms in the country’s total active pipeline. The Dominican Republic (1,874 rooms) and Puerto Rico (1,445 rooms) also reported a large number of rooms in the total active pipeline.

Among the Chain Scale segments, two of the seven segments each accounted for more than 20 percent of the total active pipeline: the Midscale without Food and Beverage segment (28.4 percent with 4,883 rooms) and the Upscale segment (23.6 percent with 4,049 rooms). The Economy segment accounted for the smallest portion of the total active pipeline (4.1 percent with 696 rooms).
