STR Global: Central/S. America May pipeline

HENDERSONVILLE, Tennessee—The Central/South America hotel development pipeline comprises 133 hotels totalling 21,276 rooms, according to the May 2010 STR Global Construction pipeline report released this week.

Among the countries in the region, Brazil reported the largest number of rooms in the total active pipeline (7,197 rooms), followed by Panama with 5,300 rooms. Panama reported the largest number of rooms in the In Construction phase (2,983). Brazil followed with 2,879 rooms in the In Construction phase.

Panama City, Panama, reported the largest number of rooms in the total active pipeline (4,795) among the key markets in the region, followed by Bogota, Columbia, with 1,001 rooms.

Three of the seven Chain Scale segments each accounted for more than 20 percent of rooms in the total active pipeline. The Upscale segment made up the largest portion of the total active pipeline with 25.2 percent (5,365 rooms), followed by the Upper Upscale segment (23.9 percent and 5,080 rooms) and the Economy segment (22.3 percent and 4,748 rooms).
