Story Highlights
  • The region had the highest development activity of the global regions.
  • UAE reported the most rooms in the total active pipeline (52,616) and in the In Construction phase (26,873).
  • The Upper Upscale segment accounted for 27.5 percent of rooms in the total active pipeline.

LONDON—The Middle East/Africa hotel development pipeline comprises 442 hotels totalling 121,400 rooms, according to the September 2010 STR Global Construction Pipeline Report released this week.

“Across MEA we still have the highest development activity of the global regions”, said Elizabeth Randall, managing director at STR Global. “The 442 hotel projects in the September pipeline make up 11.7 percent of the existing supply, showing the continued interest in the region and the opportunities provided by an existing limited supply offering.”

“The governmental support in infrastructure, transport and tourism development and the positive investment climate has continued to boost development in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia,” Randall continued. “Africa, Morocco and Egypt are benefiting from the increased development interest as well”.

Among the key countries in the region, United Arab Emirate dominated the number of rooms in the total active pipeline (52,616 rooms) and in the In Construction phase (26,873 rooms). Saudi Arabia followed with 15,084 rooms in the total active pipeline and 6,515 rooms in the In Construction phase.

Among the Chain Scale segments, three of the seven segments each accounted for more than 20 percent of rooms in the total active pipeline: the Upper Upscale segment (27.5 percent with 33,420 rooms); the Unaffiliated segment (24.9 percent with 30,287 rooms); and the Luxury segment (20.5 percent with 24,845 rooms).
