BOULDER, Colorado—As of Monday, August 22, 2011, 64 percent of U.S. school districts will be in session, a figure that jumped from 26 percent as of Monday, August 15 2011, according to data from the School Break Report compiled by RRC Associates, in partnership with MTRIP LLC.

According to the report, 42 percent of U.S. colleges/universities will be in session by Monday, August 22, a figure that rose from 1.5 percent on Monday, August 15.

During the primary back-to-school period in the last three weeks of August, transient occupancy typically trends down an average of roughly 0.5 point per day.

“It is important for hoteliers to monitor and be mindful of the school break schedule,” said Brad Garner, COO at STR. “The timing of students returning to the classroom could impact leisure trip decisions made by families. Hoteliers should recognize this relationship and plan accordingly when forecasting potential demand shifts in seasonal travel.”

The School Break Report acts as a forward-looking planning tool for destinations and hotel properties and is a proven, effective resource for anticipating future leisure demand and hotel occupancy patterns.

The report includes summaries of start date, winter break, midwinter break, spring break and end dates for 278 school districts, encompassing approximately 32 percent of the nation’s public school students, and 269 four-year universities, encompassing approximately 47 percent of the nation’s four-year university students.
