Are you investing in shower heads?
Are you investing in shower heads?

There is a push in the hotel industry to kill off the bathtub and completely revamp bathrooms. But I’d be a lot more satisfied as a guest if I knew the bathroom would come with a useful showerhead.

There is a solid argument to be made that hotel bathrooms, on the whole, are woefully behind the times. And many point to the bathtub as the shining example of this.

More and more brands are pushing for the costly removal of bathtubs, which is not welcome news for some of the more, shall we say, cost-sensitive owners in the industry.

In general, these are good things. I much prefer staying in a hotel room that doesn’t have a tired, run-down bathroom that seems like it’s been largely left to rot for a decade or more. But I’ll say I’d rather stay in a room with an old, outdated-looking bathroom with ugly countertops than a fancy, new one decked out in marble and a luxurious looking shower if I knew the bad one had a useful shower head.

For me, the quality of a hotel bathroom experience comes down to, maybe not exclusively but very close to entirely, the shower head. There are so many bathrooms with small, inflexible shower heads that make cleaning them extraordinarily difficult. Or those big, boxy rainfall ones that obviously go a long way in establishing an aesthetic but aren’t as functional as one would hope.

This is made all the more infuriating knowing how much CapEx goes into the hotel industry and how little money and time it would take to go through every hotel and put in a decent shower head. By decent I mean any shower head that’s detachable, attached with a hose and that you can actually use to get clean and go on with the rest of your day. You know, the type of shower head you can get at basically any big-box store for $30 or less.

I was reminded of how key of a difference this makes while on a trip to Mexico City, where I stayed at a Westin property. The bathroom in my room had a very nice tub with the type of shower head I prefer, and it immediately dawned on me that despite this industry’s growing tub phobia, this was as pleasant of a hotel bathroom as I’ve stayed in anywhere.

So whether you’re doing a big bathroom remodel project or not, please just get shower heads people can use. It’s not too much to ask. And leave the tub in if you want. I really don’t mind either way.
