Hotel CEOs snapshot
Posted by Stacey Mieyal Higgins at 12:00 AM

This week we learned Andy Cosslett is leaving his post at InterContinental Hotels Group. One of the things I liked most about Cosslett was that he came to IHG from Cadbury Schweppes, which meant when you interviewed him there was always an ample supply of Cadbury chocolates nearby. I'll miss that chocolate ...

Yes, it’s true executives come from all walks of life. Some have been in the hotel industry since they were out of college; others have experience in retail and branding. With this in mind, here’s a quick look at the backgrounds of the CEOs of some of the world’s largest hotel companies.

This is not so much about each individual company, but more a snapshot of the peer group of global hotel leaders. I included ages to give you an idea of the generational similarities and outliers. Some standout points:

  • Bill Marriott takes the title of oldest CEO on this list at 80 years old—and turns 81 later this month. Happy birthday to Mr. Marriott!
  • David Jian Sun of China’s Home Inns & Hotels Management is the youngest on the list at 45 years old.
  • Coolest former job? I get a Rocky Mountain high from Frits Van Paasschen’s former job at Coors Brewing Company. (I bet he’s never heard that one before.)
