Kickin’ Apps: August’s top hotel apps
Posted by Samantha Worgull at 7:15 AM

Editor’s note: Each month, HotelNewsNow.com’s Samantha Worgull highlights the five best, most interesting, unique and otherwise downright cool apps in the hotel space.

QDelegate
Here’s an app for hoteliers looking to gain a competitive advantage when booking meetings at their properties. QDelegate is a tool that
allows hoteliers to communicate more efficiently with meeting attendees. Hoteliers can do so by uploading and providing content to the app such as schedules, presentations, speaker profiles, attendee lists, maps and logistics. Once uploaded, all event-related info will be at attendees’ fingertips and updated by the hotel or event organizer as needed. The app even allows for attendee-to-attendee messaging, which could come in handy if attendees need to step out for a second and don’t want to miss pertinent information.

TalkHotels
The TalkHotels app connects hospitality professionals to a network where they can ask questions, share advice, connect with hoteliers and find vendors. (One of the app's most notable resources is its vendor directory, where vendors pay to list their products and services.) The app also allows users to take part in industry conversations with hoteliers around the world, helping them get a feel for what other hoteliers are doing to maximize revenue.

La Quinta Inn & Suites
Brand booking apps are a dime a dozen these days, but La Quinta Inn & Suites’ newest update to its application showcases an innovative new feature that stands out from the pack. Dubbed “LQ Instant Hold,” the feature allows guests to search and hold rooms for up to four hours with nothing more than a mobile number. The service, which debuted on La Quinta’s mobile website and has now made its way to the app, is designed for last-minute bookers and on-the-go guests who don’t want to stop to dig out their credit cards and enter the pesky 16-digit codes.

Kickin’ apps: May’s top hotel apps

LobbyFriend Inc.
LobbyFriend is a temporary social network that allows guests staying at a particular hotel to create profiles (with basic personal info like gender and profession) and interact with other guests while on site. Once a hotelier debuts the app, guests receive a PIN at check-in, which they can use to "enter" the virtual lobby at that hotel. From there, they can connect through the property’s “news feed” to chat with other guests, request info about the destination and receive notifications of special events or deals at the hotel (as well as deals from paying vendors). LobbyFriend is free, although upgrades like booking engines and brand customization cost hoteliers extra, said LobbyFriend’s co-founder, Mohit Kumar.

Ustay

This mobile hotel app creator allows you to do just that—create cool mobile apps that keep guests connected to your hotel 24/7. The platform includes all the usual goodies: mobile booking, property info, photo galleries and special last-minute deals via push notifications. It also allows you to create custom itineraries for everyone from solo travelers to families to showcase your property and the surrounding destination. Ustay also has “At Your Service,” which grants guests a personal concierge connecting them to the front desk with a simple click or phone call. Allow for a bit more time to create your app, however; once you specify what you want, your customized app takes four to six weeks to create.

Available in: App Store, Android Market
Cost: Free to download, monthly licensing fee (varies by level of complexity)

The unusual suspects: 4 weird hotels
Posted by Samantha Worgull at 7:08 AM

It’s time to break out that bucket list, or perhaps, start one. After scouring the Internet for unique properties, I’ve compiled some one-of-a-kind hotels where travel enthusiasts and adventure seekers might want to consider booking a room.

Some of these properties might force you to consider digging into your 401(k), but others are workable if you can get over paying for the plane ticket overseas.
